It’s the journey of the fleece that creates the story ... making each of Felt Indie’s pieces so unique.
Carefully selecting only the best materials, Margit loves to work with raw unprocessed wool and sources much of the fleece for Felt Indie direct from a couple of small farm in NSW, where many of the sheep are known by name.
Sheep are only shorn once a year and no two fleeces will ever be the same, even those from the same sheep will differ year by year. As such, each has its own unique characteristics and natural colour – ranging from dark brown to light, charcoal and to silvery shades of grey and white but it is the first shearing of the dark lambs that is so interesting, with beautiful gradients of colour emerging.
Coming straight from the sheep’s back, these pure coats are rich in lanolin and still strewn with remnants of hay, grass and vegetation - evoking thoughts of their previous life.
Using only hot water and natural soap, the wool is worked by hand until the fibres bind together. Known as wet felting, this technique is slow and heavy work but incredibly satisfying as the fleece’s new form, slowly and organically emerges.
Felt Indie’s collection includes wearables, accessories, home décor and a distinct range of rugs - Wool Island‘s. Each ‘Island’ is created using a whole fleece from a rare breed sheep and, aiming to maintain the natural shape of the fleece, provides a new and ethically sound alterative to the traditional sheepskin rug.
