Felt Indie is the inspiration of German-born artist Margit Mederich.
Based near Mullumbimby in the Byron Hinterland, surrounded by lush, rolling hills, Margit is impassioned about the ancient art of felting and uses it to create Felt Indie’s unique range of woollen rugs, wearables, accessories and home décor. Margit’s natural sense of the aesthetic melds with her love and sensitivity for the environment to create Felt Indie’s distinct range of one-off, hand-felted organic pieces. Carrying fond childhood memories of helping with the sheep on her Grandparent’s farm in East Germany, the seed for Margit’s woolly relationship was planted many years ago. Since being introduced to felting in 2012, Margit has been exploring the spectrum of traditional techniques and pushes the boundaries to create new possibilities. Being the oldest form of fabric known, felt predates that of knitting and weaving with remnants dating back to 6,500 BC. By delving into the realms of the craft, Felt Indie is revisiting the purity and simplicity of the process experienced by ancient cultures and is quietly revitalising the craft with a distinct contemporary feel that extends it beyond traditional bounds. Environmentally aware, all of Felt Indie’s pieces are created naturally and slowly, by hand with water and olive oil soap. Using sheep or alpaca wool, but also incorporating silk and cotton at times, each item enhances and celebrates the natural characteristics, texture and colour of the raw materials. The making is such a deeply satisfying process for Margit - it becomes a journey in itself as the fibres bind and the form evolves – bringing a new life to a shorn fleece. |
